This was the first collaboration between Carsten Nicolai and Finnish electronic musician Mika Vainio. It was released in 1997 on a 10′ clear vinyl and CD. The four tracks inhabit some of the refined and most minimal territory the two artists have explored over the years. Conceived as part of an installation to be exhibited concurrently in Germany, Finland and Poland, the inspiration behind this music comes from magnetspintomograph and radiotelescope-recordings of pulsars. Beyond the academic concept, the music is exquisitely elemental, incorporating Mika Vainio’s enduring tones and Alva Noto’s suave electronic grid forms. There’s a clarity to these recordings that appeals back to the very genesis of electronic music, yet it still sounds timelessly essential today.
