Transrapid is Alva Noto’s extended play released in 2004 and the first installment of the “Transall” triptych. Central to the series are the themes of the increasing speed of information flow, utopias, and the fragmentation of ideas. Transrapid features an essay by journalist and author Ulf Poschardt addressing topics such as the acceleration of art, technology, and culture. The essay concludes by identifying “speed” and “stasis” as the driving forces of the contemporary experience.
Alva Noto – Transrapid, Transvision, Transspray
The “Transall” triptych was originally released on three cds: Transrapid, Transvision and Transspray. Across the 3 installments particular emphasis is put on the rhythmic aspects of minimalism, utilising Carsten Nicolai’s minimal intricacies in brilliant white surroundings. There’s a sharp clarity to Nicolai’s construction’s that’s hard to dismember – you know that you shouldn’t be able to relate to this music’s scattered trajectory emotionally, and yet, in between moments of microscopic dissection and unusual arrangements – the material works on an astonishingly moving level.
